About the Board

The West Virginia State Board of Sanitarians was established by the West Virginia Legislature in 1957 to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of West Virginia.

The Board is responsible for the examination, licensing, and regulation of sanitarians in the State of West Virginia. It ensures that all registered sanitarians meet the professional standards required to practice in the state.

The Board consists of seven members appointed by the Governor, including registered sanitarians, a physician, and a citizen member, all serving staggered four-year terms.

Duties of a Sanitarian

Sanitarians in West Virginia are environmental health professionals who work to prevent disease and protect public health through inspection, education, and enforcement of health regulations.

They conduct inspections of food service establishments, public swimming pools, schools, hotels, and other facilities to ensure compliance with state health codes and regulations.

Sanitarians also investigate complaints, collect environmental samples, and work with businesses and the public to correct health hazards and prevent the spread of disease.
